The Homophone Phone Game

This is a simple game you can use to practice homophones and homonyms with your student. The game requires a little bit of preparation on your part, but it is a game you can use repeatedly during lessons.

This game also uses some of the most common homophones, but you can certainly add other homophones or change them as your student learns more word pairs.

Here’s what you need to do to prepare for the Homophone Phone Game:

1. Print a picture of a telephone that has both a receiver and a base.
2. Make 12 copies of the picture.
3. Cut the telephone pictures into two parts so you have 12 receivers and 12 bases.
4. On each telephone receiver, write a sentence from the list below.

Sentence List

These shoes were on ______.

Our boat won’t _____ without wind.

The kite soared _____ the air.

The pitcher _____ the ball very fast.

The dog is just sitting _____.

_____ always late to school.

She ate the _____ pizza by herself.

There’s a _____ in my sock.

There are _____ more bananas.

Now shuffle the phone pieces well and spread them out. Have your student match the bases (words) with the receivers (sentences).

When the student thinks he has a correct match, he says, “Ring, ring!”

If the match is correct, you say, “Ring, ring!” back to the student. If the match is not correct, say, “Beep, beep,” indicating a busy signal, and put the two pieces back into play.

Note: if you plan on reusing this activity with other sentences, write the sentences on a post-it note that can be peeled off and replaced.
