Homophone Worksheets

Homophone worksheets are a handy tool for reinforcing what the student has learned about homophones (also known as homonyms). Worksheets provide practice and can help you determine whether the student has learned correct homophone usage or not.

Here are some tips for teaching homophones using homophone worksheets:

  • Talk about the meaning of particular homophones on the worksheet prior to giving your student the homophone worksheet to complete.
  • Use worksheets in conjunction with graphic organizers to help students learn definitions and identify homophones.
  • Keep kids engaged by using worksheets that have an element of fun, such as fun facts, homophone games, or bonus activities.
  • Crossword puzzle homophone worksheets are also effective for reinforcing proper word usage.
  • Fill-in-the-blank worksheets can work well to teach homophones, too.
  • Encourage students to use the homophones they practiced on the worksheets. Some possibilities: they can write original sentences, tongue twisters, or other creative writing exercise.

To help you teach your students about homophones and homonyms, the All About Homophones book contains 101 interesting worksheets covering sets of words taught in grades 1 through 8. Words range from to/two/too and there/their for the younger crowd or those needing remedial practice, up to words for older learners such as assistance/assistants and complement/compliment.

Thoughtful features have been built into the pages, keeping in mind the needs and interests of kids. For example, “Fun Facts” and “Try This” activities are included at the bottom of each worksheet, to get kids thinking and to expand their vocabulary. The sheets are cross-referenced with corresponding crossword puzzles and games. No grade level is indicated on the workbook pages, so you are free to use them with any age.
